A Little Bit about Merkel Here at Beaters Lodge we have a couple of interesting pieces made by German gun makers Gebrüder Merkel Suhl, a 203 12 bore Sidelock Over & Under Single Trigger and a 303 20 bore Sidelock Over & Under Single Trigger. The company was founded in 1898 by Albert Oskar Merkel, Karl Paul Merkel, and Gebhard Merkel. In 1905 the company began manufacturing high quality bolt-action rifles, double rifles, and shotguns. During the First and Second World Wars the company had its ups and downs. After the Second World War the production of bolt-action rifles, double rifles and shotgun commenced. In 1952 the company became owned by the government of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). After the reunification of Germany in 1990, the company went through modernisation, and in 2007 it was sold to the UAE company Caracal International which is a part of the state's owned EDGE Group.
